I suppose a short trip through my history of compromise with all forms of technological output is in order.
- Despised Facebook. Got one in March 2007. Use religiously.
- Despised blogculture. Got one in Februrary 2009. Use agnostically--it's there, but I don't like to admit my need of it.
- Despised texting. Got it in September of 2009. Use gnostically--it's evil, but I must use it anyway.
- Despise Twitter--and am still holding out.
I think I do find most forms of online spew inconvenient, but sometimes it's just as nice (and narcissistic) to drop your thoughts out on the information superhighway, for some Good Samaritan to find, nurture, and nurse back to health. Isn't that what we all want, anyway? To have our thoughts, statuses, photos and notes come back to us affirmed, full of meaning and richer for their time at play with other thoughts, statuses, photos and notes? And yet I do this constantly.
I will never turn this into a job. There are far more--and far funnier--blogs that do this already, and I'm more than content to follow them in all my unrequited envy. And I don't envision this pulling in employers and admirers from the seven seas and four corners--actually, aren't blogs usually downers on most applications? Whoops. I'm going to have to use one of those facebook quizzes to come up with a new name. (UPDATE: Just took the "What's your Naughty Christmas" name? and got "Sugar Britches. Ho hum and WTF?) And out of all my own posts, I personally prefer most of the stuff I've posted from elsewhere to my original material. If you're smart, that's what you think, too.
My "grand vision," I suppose, is in most ways self-serving. Years in the future, after I've long forgotten the password for this sepulcher, it might be fun to relive all the thoughts of my "youth," and see what a few good moments at real work, with real people have served to produce.
In the meantime, hold me accountable on the Twitter thing--I really can't stand it.
Also, if the blog layout has changed three times in the few minutes it's taken you to read this, DO NOT BE ALARMED. I'm probably just in possession of a few spare moments and avoiding facebook. THAT is the cycle, friends. And IT IS VICIOUS.
